Why was St. Valentin so important?
About eight hundred years before Valentine’s Day, a man named Claudius came to power in Rome. He felt that marriage was a bad thing because it made men into poor soldiers. Therefore, he forbade his empire to marry. Saint Valentine disagreed with this rule, so he would secretly marry couples who came to him. St. Valentine was captured, and shortly after he was stoned and then beheaded.
Valentine’s day tradition
In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on 14 February. Hearts, keys and keyholes are favourite decorations on spoons. Decor means, “You opened my heart!”
In the Middle Ages, young men and women pulled names from bowls to see who their lovers were. They’ll wear those names on their sleeves for a week. Putting your heart on your sleeve now means it’s easy for others to know how you feel.
In some countries, young women may receive clothing gifts from young men. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.
Valentine Day Thoughts
Some people used to think that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she sees a sparrow, she will marry a poor man and be very happy. If she sees a goldfinch, she’ll marry a millionaire.
A loveseat is a large chair. It was originally designed for a woman and her wide skirt. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together β but not too closely!
No matter what’s true or what’s a myth, Valentine’s Day has become big business for flower, card and candy companies etc. Many people exist only because of this day of the year. If you have a wife or girlfriend with a man and you let Valentine’s Day go by without sending her flowers or candy, you’re in big trouble.
So take my advice, but also put some effort into your gift. A well-chosen V-Day card will take you a long way; getting it from a woman who knows, Valentine’s Day flowers are still your best bet or other material things. If you’re lucky enough to meet someone who loves you on Valentine’s Day, then you should show him or her what they mean to you.
Those who deliver Valentine’s Day flowers can be a big moneymaker for these companies, however, the day makes it difficult for those people to show their loved ones that they care about them sometimes.
Valentine’s Day flowers make it easier for everyone to demonstrate their love and devotion to those who love them.
